As we happen to be in the thick of the “100 Deadliest Days” for teen driving accidents, it should not be surprising we are seeing more accidents involving serious injuries to teen drivers. According to a recent news article from NECN, two teens suffered life-threatening injuries in a recent car accident in the New England area.
Authorities say they were called to the scene of an accident where a driver had apparently lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a group of large trees. There was substantial damage to the vehicle as a result of this single-vehicle accident, and the 19-year-old driver and 17-year-old passenger were both trapped inside the car.
The state police and local fire department personnel arrive at the accident scene around the same time. The firefighters worked to get the young victims out of the wrecked vehicle. Once they were able to cut through the wreckage and get the occupants extracted from the car, they found them to have suffered very severe personal injuries. The passenger, first-responders believe, was in need of emergency surgery and would not likely survive an ambulance ride and treatment at a local hospital, so they radioed for a medevac helicopter. Once the helicopter arrived on scene, the flight crew transported car accident victim to Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), located in downtown Boston.
The teen driver of the vehicle involved in the crash was also treated by first responders and was taken by ambulance to a trauma center in New Hampshire. State troopers closed the road for several hours to conduct an investigation into the cause of this serious single-vehicle accident and to determine exactly why the car left the road and hit the trees. The state police typically use a statewide accident reconstruction task force stationed at patrol barracks throughout the state to conduct a full investigation and determine the cause of many serious accidents. It should be noted, authorities have not, as of the time of the article, released any information as to why the vehicle ran into the trees causing the serious car accident in which the two teen occupants were injured.

Additionally, while any teen with a license is legally old enough drive, many do not possess the adequate maturity to understand the importance of driving safety and the frailty of human life when dealing with motor vehicle accidents.
This time of year, we are dealing with newly-licensed teens who not only lack experience and emotional maturity, they are also out of school and have a lot of free time to go driving with their friends, and this can lead to a lot of trouble. When you couple this with underage drinking and driving, the chance of serious motor vehicle accidents is even higher.
