When someone gets in a car, they are expected to wear a seat belt.  This is instilled upon us from a young age, and, in case we forget, the car will sound annoying alarms and flash lights to remind us to fasten our seat belts.  This is not only good advice, but it is also the law.

seatbelt-602535-mHowever, this was not always the case.  Seat belts were first used in airplanes for pilots and were unheard of in cars.  This was also at a time when dashboards and steering wheels were made of hard metals and woods instead of padded materials like they are made today for safety.  While it has taken many years to ingrain the need to wear a seat belt, it seems that most people are willing comply.  According to a recent news release from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), we are now at 90 percent compliance in the United States, which is the highest it has ever been. According to a recent news article from CBS Local Boston, a pedestrian was crossing the street outside a bar in Brockton, Massachusetts at around 1:30 a.m. when he was struck by a vehicle. Following the crash, the driver reportedly fled the scene.

police lineWitnesses said when the car hit the 25-year-old Brockton man, he was thrown into the air.  He was with a group of friends at the nightclub, and the accident happened as the group was leaving the establishment. Continue reading

Terran Hasslebach now plays a hybrid linebacker and defensive lineman for the top-ten ranked Colorado football team.  His is the son of Super Bowl-winning Harald Hasselbach.  While he hopes to follow in his father’s footsteps and play in the NFL one day, he almost didn’t make on a high school football field due a very serious car accident. That’s according to a recent story from ABC News.

football-kick-1534163In 2010, he was sitting in his father’s BMW when they were hit by another car that was traveling at 60 miles per hour. The driver of the other car had allegedly run a stoplight and then crashed into them at high rate of speed.  His father said he remembers the exact moment of the crash and that there was no time to swerve or to even slow down.  He said he was thinking about his son and thought they might not survive the horrific crash that was about to happen. A Boston resident recently died in a car accident involving a semi tractor-trailer in Shrewsbury, according to a the Worcester Telegram.  This fatal crash allegedly involved a passenger car crashing into one tractor-trailer and then another that was parked at a local truck stop on Route 20.

truckforwardAuthorities have said the accident occurred just before 1 a.m. when the driver was heading westbound on Route 20 and crashed into a semi-tractor trailer, towing a vehicle owned by the United Parcel Service (UPS).  After hitting the UPS trailer, decedent’s 2007 Infiniti went into a spin.  The vehicle spun over and across the eastbound lanes and then into the parking lot of the adjacent truck stop, where it crashed into the parked trailer. According to a recent news report from CBS Boston, a driver traveling in the wrong direction on Interstate 495 near Boston was killed in a fatal car wreck.  A spokesperson for the Massachusetts State Police (MSP) has said the accident occurred around 2 a.m. and involved a Toyota Corolla being driven by the alleged at-fault driver who was killed and another driver who was traveling in the correct direction.

highway1While police are still investigating and have not concluded why the victim’s car was traveling in the wrong direction, they have said one witness said the car was traveling in the wrong direction.  At this point, he called 911 and turned his vehicle around so he could follow the car that was driving in the wrong direction.  He did this so he could flash his lights and sound his horn in hopes that an oncoming vehicle would be able to see the car more easily.   However, the police dispatcher told him that for his own safety, he should turn around and get off the highway, as troopers were on the way.  The crash happened just after this call ended. In Massachusetts during the winter, it is common for motorists to encounter deer.  While it is sometimes nice to see these animals, when they are not on the road in front of a car, it can result in a serious car accident.

Accidents involving hit-and-run drivers often present additional complications that are not seen in a typical car accident lawsuit.  One of the reasons for this is that the driver may or may not be found. According to a recent news article from the New York Daily News, National Football League (NFL) running back Isaiah Pead just lost part of his leg in a serious car accident.  Pead had played three games for the Miami Dolphins this season before he was cut and released from the team.  While it had not been clear whether another team would pick him up in the future, it now appears certain that his NFL career is over as result of this serious car accident.

porscheAuthorities reported the 26-year-old Pead was driving his 2011 Cadillac when he lost control of the vehicle.  At that point, he crashed through a metal guardrail and drove off the side of the interstate highway on which he was traveling.  It is believed that he was driving at a high rate of speed at the time he lost control.
