For the past few weeks, the Boston Globe has been following the trial of a defendant charged in connection with a serious car accident that occurred on the Arborway in the city’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood. To summarize the evidence presented at trial by the Office of the District Attorney for Suffolk County (Boston prosecutor), defendant was driving 60 miles per hour on a road with a speed limit of 30 miles per hour.

nightmotorwaylightsThe evidence showed he was traveling at what was called a reckless speed while going around a significant curve in the road, and he lost control of his vehicle. At this point, he drove into a median, which caused the car to roll over, and, while tumbling, it crashed into victim’s pickup truck. Continue reading

According to a recent article from The Guardian, a lawsuit involving a 2011 car accident that occurred at the Yale vs. Harvard football game has finally reached a settlement.

949267_pedestrian_crossing_signWitnesses say students from a Yale fraternity were bringing kegs of beer to a tailgating event in a rented truck at the time of the accident. The driver of the truck was trying to get through a crowd of students that were headed to the game and decided to rev the truck’s engine to get their attention and get them to move out of the way of the truck. According to a recent news article in the Boston Globe, Darius Fleming, a linebacker for the New England Patriots, is being called a hero after he sustained an injury pulling a woman from her car after she was involved in a car accident in Foxboro.

fire-brigade-759827-mWitnesses say the woman was involved in a three-car accident just outside of Gillette Stadium along Route 1.   When Fleming arrived, he saw that the victim was trapped in her car, and there appeared to be smoke coming from it, so he believed the vehicle was on fire. As it turns out, the car was not on fire, but it was dust and smoke from the airbag deployment. It is common for people to think the car is on fire after an airbag deploys. There is also often a burning smell from the charge that deployed the airbag. Continue reading

Often times, when you are out on the highway, you will see parts of the tire from a large truck lying on the pavement. This by itself can be a dangerous road hazard, and you may have to take evasive action to avoid the steel-belted rubber. However, it is when the tire first comes off the truck that it is most dangerous.

tire1While some over the road truck drivers have a trailer that they use all the time and wait for it to get loaded and unloaded, many drivers simply drop off their empty trailer at distribution center loading dock and pick up a full trailer for the next trip. These trailers often do not get the maintenance they need, and they certainly do NOT get the care given to the driver’s tractor. Continue reading

Sometimes we come across an article in the paper, or, more likely on somebody’s Facebook feed these days, and it’s an article about a serious car accident. While we may read a description of the how the car accident occurred and feel sorry for the victims and their families, most people do not realize just how much of a lasting effect a serious car accident can have on those victims and their families unless they have lived through a similar experience themselves.

mG2XP3eThere are a variety of reasons for this, but one of them is that there are very few news articles about what life is like for car accident victims and their families in the months and years following the tragic day when their lives were forever changed. However, one recent article from Boston.com has followed up with the United States Secret Service agent who was seriously injured in New England car accident in the last few days of this past December. In case you missed the countless Facebook posts and memes, last year was the year Doc Brown took Marty McFly to the future in the DeLorean. Must to the disappointment of many who saw Back to the Future, we still do not have any flying cars. There have been some claims of flying cars, but since you need a private pilot’s license and an airport, they are more akin to a drivable airplane than a flying car.

mmUMQT0While flying cars may never happen, self-driving cars are being developed that, at some point in the not too distant future, will be driving down the roads of every neighborhood in America. One the on hand, self-driving cars can prevent accidents, since many accidents are fault of negligent drivers. However, as we have already seen with some of the self-driving cars Google is testing, when there is an accident, it is often hard to determine who is at fault. Continue reading

While It took a lot longer than usual for winter to get going in Massachusetts and across much of the Eastern United States, it seems that, at least for now, winter is finally here. We have already seen a least one snow event and are likely to see quite a bit more snow, as we typically do even in the mildest of Boston winters.

ice-1552892While driving on snow and ice is already dangerous enough, as discussed in a recent news feature from Danvers Patch, snow plows also present serious safety issues when out on the roads of the Commonwealth. One of the major issues is that the plows are very slow-moving vehicles, and drivers are not sure whether or not they should try to pass the plow or just accept it will take them a lot longer to get where they are headed.
