Authorities alleged that Fred Jackson, a running back for the Seattle Seahawks, crashed his sports car into a large planter box and stop sign outside the team’s practice facility. Authorities then alleged he dragged the sign across the two-lane road before coming to a stop. According to a recent news article from ESPN, Jackson was not hurt in the crash. Witnesses say Jackson’s black Corvette sustained moderate front-end damage.
While this seems like a somewhat simple situation, matters were made more complex by the fact that TMZ reported Jackson and Marshawn Lynch, a fellow Seahawks’ running back well known for his refusal to speak with the media during last year’s Super Bowl, were involved in an illegal street race at the time of the crash.
However, Renton police officers who were tasked with investigating the car accident said there is no indication Jackson was involved in a race with another vehicle. They said Jackson stayed on the scene and spoke with police. He was said to be very polite and cooperative with the investigation. Police went on to say there would not be any further investigation into the cause of the car crash. TMZ continues to claim the validity of its reporting and said that Lynch drove away from the scene of the car accident unharmed. It is important to note that nobody has been charged with any crime in connection with this incident. Police did, however, issue a moving violation to Jackson for inattention while driving.
When you speak with a Boston car accident lawyer, one of the first questions you may be asked is whether the police were called to the scene of the accident and cited one of the drivers in connection with the crash. The hope is that the police cited the other driver in the car accident and did not issue any citations to you.
However, in some accidents, the police do not show up and, therefore, do not conduct a police report and do not issue any citations. This does not mean you do not have a case; it just means that there may be more work necessary to prove liability. This may even be true of if the police did show up and determined you were at fault for the accident. If the police were hasty in their investigation, or even knew the other driver, it is possible the finding of fault will not be appropriate. This is not to say most police officers are not honest and through, but there are always exceptions to the rule.
One of the best things you can do if there is any question as to liability is to speak with an experienced car accident lawyer as soon as possible, so your attorney can conduct a full investigation. This can include using a private investigator and an accident reconstruction specialist. While this can be of great help to proving you have a case against the other driver, it is essential the investigation begins as soon as possible, because it will be much more difficult if time passes and evidence is lost.
